Day Three: Shopping and an old church!

September 17, 2011

We slept all night, and then some! It was 9:30 before our blurry eyes popped open. This put us a little behind schedule, but we needed a good sleep-in day.

Our first stop was Portobelo Market. I guess you could compare the market to a "flea" market back home. It is held daily on Portobelo road in the neighborhood of Notting Hill. Saturdays have more venders and bigger crowds. We spent a couple of hours being jostled, shoved and squeezed by the massive crowd as we looked over the vender stalls. We bought a few things, mainly long flowing scarves. Mom bought a white lacy one that looks absolutely gorgeous on her. I am feeling a twinge of regret that I did not get one too!

Because of our late start this morning, and the enjoyable time spent at the market we had to slash a couple of sites of our to-do list today. We finished the day at St. Paul’s Cathedral. It is one of my favorite old churches. The inside is golden and breath taking. Mom and Deb even made the steep climb up to the whispering gallery in the center of the massive dome. I have made the climb before and am not a big fan of the towering height!

We are still feeling the effects of jet lag. We are pushing through it, but by the end of the day we are pretty tired. Debbie was the one who started to drift off this afternoon. We got back to the hotel early and mom and I made it our crusade to keep her awake. She made it until 8:00, mom and I dropped off around 9:00. Its now early morning of the 18th. I have been up since 3:00 AM. Our bodies are so wacked out!

We have made an interesting observation. Back home we spend most of our TV watching time on BBC shows on PBS. We love the British comedies and the period dramas and I am a huge fan of Doctor Who! However, now that we are actually here in England all we can find on the "telly" is American shows and movies! It’s a bit disappointing!
