Day eight and nine: SCOTLAND!

September 21, 2015

We are in Edinburgh!  We got here yesterday.  We are staying at the Straven Guest House.  I stayed here 17 years ago on my first trip to Europe.  We are about 15 minutes outside of Edinburgh's city center.  The guest house is on the beach. . . its beautiful.  The girls and I love it and don't want to leave tomorrow. . . The breakfast here has been especially good.  Jeri and I love the porridge and mom even tried Blood Pudding this morning!

Yesterday mom and I walked the promenade.  We sat and drank hot chocolate, ate soup and crusty bread and watched the waves.

Jeri, on the other hand, was running all over Edinburgh looking for the Harry Potter walking tour, to no avail.  She finally gave up and armed with the address of our guest house and some vague instructions from me she went in search of the correct bus and some good direction!  She found neither. . . but after getting on the wrong bus and finding herself on the wrong street she eventually made her way to us.  Yea Jeri!

Today, with a hearty Scottish breakfast in our bellies, we caught the bus into town and took a 3 hour guided walking tour of the city.  It was brilliant!  Our tour guide was funny and informative.  We really enjoyed it.  We received some Harry Potter related information from him so we set out to find some of the sights related to our favorite books.  We were on a pilgrimage!  We went to the cemetery where JK got some of her inspiration and "borrowed" some her her names like Tom Riddle and McGonagall.  We saw the school she patterned Hogwarts after.  We ate at the Elephant House Cafe where she wrote most of the first book.  Jeri and I were as giddy as school girls!  It was a trip highlight!

We did a little walking and shopping after that and set back off to our home away from home.  We had dinner out of grocery sacks sitting on the promenade watching the sea. . .

Tomorrow we are off to Oban.  Our trip is winding down. . . Boo. . .
